The work has a clear purpose: to highlight Mexico’s importance as an actor in contemporary trans-Pacific relations, a role that has been largely overlooked in both official discourse and academic scholarship. To this end, the study offers a historiographical examination of everyday life as shaped by the intersecting dynamics of diplomacy and migration. The author therefore describes his own work as both synchronic and disruptive.
In this book, diplomacy takes on a different dimension. It is understood not only in the sense proposed by Harold Nicolson in his work of the same name, but also as the management of negotiations that inherently reflect the interests of a political, economic, and ideological project. In other words, diplomacy constitutes an art through which the state actor represents itself while exercising its full capacity for agency, as I identified throughout the work. Migration, for its part, is understood not merely as movement from one place to another, but in terms of the broader implications that such movement has for the receiving community. That community plays a decisive role in enabling—or constraining—the formation of new social ties that facilitate adaptation, a process that necessarily entails resilience.
