Between June 4 and 6, 2025, the University of the Sea (UMAR) at Huatulco hosted a Joint Conference of the Mexican Association of International Studies (AMEI) and the International Studies Association (ISA). This gathering, which brought together more than 400 participants from about 25 countries, is part of a tradition of inter-American academic cooperation that began in 1983 in Mexico City and continued in Acapulco (1993), Manzanillo (1997), and Cancún (2008). The significance of these types of conferences lies in the fact that they provide spaces where knowledge about the discipline and practice of international relations is produced, debated, and (de)legitimized. Academic conferences are, in themselves, exercises of scientific diplomacy and epistemic community-building that may, in the long term, influence public policy formulation, professional training, and the definition of global research agendas.
